Hematologic findings in children exposed to A-bomb radiation in utero in Hiroshima.

چکیده
M ANY hematologic studies have been made on the survivors of the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, hut since few have dealt with the children irradiated in utero,14 we have investigated the general hematologic findings in these children. A group of children exposed to the Hiroshima A-Bomb while in utero and a nonexposed group have been examined yearly at the Atomic Bomb Casualty Commission ( ABCC ) since 1950. Hematologic data obtained during these examinations form the basis of this report.

Renal damage is a serious complication of exposure of the kidneys to X-rays.' The severity of detectable renal damage depends upon the dosage of X-rays and can vary from transient alterations of blood flow which are difficult to detect to severe renal insufficiency and hypertension leading to death.'2 Although the kidneys of adults are considered relatively radioresistant, experiments in animal...

Background: The earlier Atomic Bomb explosion in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and three worth mentioning nuclear accidents - detonation at Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, Chernobyl nuclear fallout and an accident at Three Mile Island nuclear power plant have made us more worried about the secure exploitation of nuclear energy. The central focus of this paper is to review radiation-mediated health e...

Current legal frameworks for radiation exposure limits are based on the risk models of the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP). In Publication 90 (2003), ICRP presents a safe (threshold) dose range of up to 100 mSv for radiogenic effects resulting from in utero exposure and bases this conclusion on the findings in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. However, a variety of observations...

With the increasing use of atomic energy in our society, the effects of ionizing radiation, particularly those that are delayed, have become a matter of great concern. Since 1947 the Atomic Bomb Casualty Commission (ABCC) has conducted continuing medical studies among survivors of the atomic bombing in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, including since 1951 a group of children who were irradiated in utero...
متن کاملLeukemia in Hiroshima atomic bomb survivors.
A CAUSAL RELATION between radiation and leukemia has been well demonstrated.112 The reported cases of leukemia in people exposed to radium, 1.’I 4 1 occupational x-ray,’ I therapeutic x-ray to the thyroid region in childhood’92#{176} and possibly in utero diagnostic x-ray,2’ have been few in number. Estimates of the increased risk associated with exposure of man to radiation depend heavily upon...
